Attempting to determine if a casino will hurt existing money generating business in any local area can be tough but is extremely hard to determine if you are in a small market. In Wyandotte County Kansas that is exactly the task facing one committee set to approve any gambling or casino operation in the county.
A Kansas board deciding who will operate a casino in Wyandotte County wonders whether the new gambling-and-hotel complex will hurt existing businesses.
Meanwhile, another board has taken a step toward revoking the licenses for three now-closed dog and horse racing parks that once had hoped to have contracts with the Kansas Lottery for slot machines.
The slots at the tracks and one state-owned casino each in Cherokee, Ford, Sumner and Wyandotte counties are permitted under a law enacted last year in hopes of eventually generating $200 million a year in revenues for the state. The Lottery will own the new gambling, but private developers will manage the day-to-day operations.
